NJAFA President Jerry Keenan with elected officials and other key leaders for the Gateway Tunnel Project signing.

July 8, 2024 – This morning, the federal government made good on the remainder of its $12 billion commitment to the most important infrastructure initiative in the nation: The Gateway Project.

The Federal Transit Administration committed a final $6.88 billion to help fund the tunneling projects.

NJ Alliance for Action President Jerry Keenan and Senior Vice President Chris Hartman were on hand to witness the ceremony, held in West Side Manhattan. The agreement was signed by Acting Federal Transit Administrator Veronica Vanterpool and Gateway Development Commission CEO Kris Kolluri.

They were joined by elected officials, including many members of the New Jersey and New York congressional delegations.

“‘Transformational’ is the best way to describe the impact the Gateway Project will have on our state and the region over the next decade and a half. Transformational for the 95,000 direct jobs it will produce and the vital access it will provide on the busiest rail corridor in the nation,” Keenan said. He added, “There are not enough superlatives to underscore what it will do for U.S. transportation over the next century.”

The Gateway Project is more than just tunnels, and many of the supportive pieces of the project, like the Portal North Bridge and the Tonnelle Avenue Bridge, are already well underway. The construction activity is expected to continue through 2038 with the rehabilitation and reopening of the existing tunnel. The new Hudson River rail tunnel, construction expected to begin later this year, is expected to be opened in 2035.
