February 5, 2024 – Special Advisor to the President, Bill Healey, was invited to represent the Alliance for Action at the FIFA World Cup 2026 NYNJ Host Committee Watch Party on Sunday night.

“I was so fortunate yesterday to represent the Alliance for the World Cup ’26 announcement. It was a privilege to be at MetLife Stadium with Governor Murphy and 500 others who had so much at stake. As we waited for the announcement, I remembered being a small boy from North Jersey playing soccer every day at recess with my classmates. That was well over 50 years ago.

It’s incredible to think about the growth of soccer in this country over those 50 years. Pele introduced most of the country to soccer when he joined the Cosmos in 1975. Two years later, he was packing fans into Giants Stadium.

So, yeah, there were a lot of memories yesterday. The group was enthusiastic and hopeful as the announcement drew closer. When FIFA awarded the world’s biggest sporting event to Jersey, the room was simply ‘electric.’

It was something that boy kicking it around at recess could never have imagined,” Healey said.

The impact on New Jersey that will result from hosting the 2026 World Cup will be immense. With nearly 15,000 potential jobs and $2 billion, this certainly is a huge win for New Jersey.
