Announcement of Key Permitting for the

Newark Bay Bridge Project

The New Jersey Alliance for Action is delighted at today’s announcement by the United States Coast Guard. It has concluded its National Environmental Policy Act process and has issued a finding of no significant impact (FONSI) for the construction of the Newark Bay Bridge. The Coast Guard has fulfilled its responsibility under the NEPA process.

This bridge will be the first significant part of the rebuilding of the entire Newark Bay Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike. This is infrastructure that is nearly seven decades old and has outlived its planned useful life. It needs to be rebuilt and expanded. Car traffic, truck traffic and the size of today’s vehicles and the current volume were never envisioned for the present structure.

The announcement of the FONSI permit – and hopefully very shortly by a permit from the Army Corps of Engineers – unleashes a project that will serve to alleviate critical traffic congestion and serve the burgeoning residential and commercial activity of Hudson County. Eighty percent of the traffic served by the Newark Bay Extension stays in Hudson County.

This critical corridor is also essential for the smooth flow of port activity.

“The Newark Bay Bridge will put 25,000 people to work during its construction. Eighteen thousand of those jobs will be directly in the construction trades and the rest in related activity. It’s another dramatic step in the critical rebuilding of the infrastructure of our region.”
