“The initial disbursement of federal funds to the Gateway Development Commission is an important and welcome step forward. The Hudson Tunnel Project is the most important infrastructure project in America, and restoring access to federal dollars that were already committed is critical.

I was there on that hot July afternoon when the federal government signed the Full Funding Grant Agreement. That agreement represented a promise — to New Jersey, to New York, to commuters, to workers, and to the national economy. Those commitments must be honored in full.

While the release of $30 million is encouraging, construction remains paused. Thousands of construction workers are still waiting to return to the job, and the region remains dependent on 110-plus-year-old rail tunnels that are well beyond their intended lifespan.

The New Jersey Alliance for Action will continue working closely with the Gateway Development Commission, the Port Authority of NY & NJ, NJ TRANSIT, labor and business leaders, and elected officials at every level to ensure the remaining federal funds are released promptly and construction resumes at full strength.

This project is too important to delay. Every day counts.”
