PERTH AMBOY, NJ (June 24, 2025) – The Alliance for Action was proud to stand with Governor Phil Murphy, NJ Transportation Commissioner Fran O’Connor, NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kris Kolluri and other NJ infrastructure leaders today for the groundbreaking of the second phase of the Raritan River Bridge Replacement Project.
“This isn’t just a bridge—it’s a symbol of what’s possible when we invest in New Jersey’s future,” said Jerry Keenan, President of the New Jersey Alliance for Action. “The Alliance has advocated for this investment for years, and today’s groundbreaking is proof of what strong partnerships between government, labor, and industry can accomplish. I’m proud we’re part of the team helping to make it happen.”
The nearly $450 million dollar replacement, funded by an FTA grant, is set to be completed in 2029. The project will connect over 10,000 daily riders to career centers, cultural hubs, and local businesses while minimizing frustrating delays and prolonged interruptions.
The existing bridge is 116 years old and suffered damage during Superstorm Sandy. The new vertical lift bridge will be significantly less vulnerable to weather, designed with resiliency as a priority. It will provide a 2 track moveable span across the Raritan River, a part of the North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL) which connects to major cities like Newark, Jersey City, and Manhattan as well as shore communities.
The Raritan River Bridge Project comes as a part of NJ TRANSIT’s anticipated over $17 billion capital plan over the next decade, which includes several other major projects like the Portal North Bridge and the Hudson Tunnel Project.
The Alliance for Action is proud to support this critical infrastructure replacement for the economic and environmental benefit it will provide to countless communities.
